The government is considering to issue temporary work permits to illegal foreign workers in the country to overcome the shortage of foreign workers in the oil palm and rubber industries.

Employers' stubbornness to come forward and register their illegal foreign workers for the 'Enforcement Card (E-Card) did not achieve the targeted response.

Director-General of Immigration Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali today warned employers to immediately register their illegal foreign workers.

The practice should be stopped for public safety, the Home Ministry says.

Malaysia only allows locals and Nepalese to be employed by security companies licensed by the Home Ministry.

It is hoped the government will work closely with business associations and local chambers of commerce to legalise all illegal workers to help SMEs grow their businesses.

The programme would be initially implemented for three months and was expected to benefit about two million workers without valid work permits.

The Home Ministry (KDN) has convened discussions with several labour source countries to issue one-way travel document in a bid to deport illegal foreign workers to their countries of origin.
